The first stop is the Peppin Heritage Centre, which is also the Deniliquin Visitor Information Centre at 295 George Street. Here you can get all the information you need about the town. So, pick up maps and brochures to help you navigate the town.

The Peppin Heritage Centre takes you on a journey through history through a series of displays and exhibits. You can see a 19th-century classroom, the Deniliquin Gaol, and a reconstructed ram shed from the 1860s. The centre also hosts traveling art exhibitions throughout the year, providing a diverse range of cultural experiences for visitors.

The Visitor Information Centre also provides a fascinating insight into the Peppin Merino breed of sheep. The breed was developed by the Peppin family, who were early pioneers in the region. As the river meanders by, you can enjoy the shade of the magnificent trees. Also, the unique natural Lagoon system has many trails and picnic spots.

At McLean Beach you will find one of Deniliquin’s Caravan Park. It is close to the white sandy beach, where you can go swimming or fishing. There is also a Boat Ramp at the end of the beach area.

On the river bank there is an area for a picnic, as well as toilets, and change rooms.

This is part of the beach to beach walking track, and it will take you back into the town centre. The walk follows the rivers edge and it is a nice quiet walk.

It’s worth visiting the site at other times to tour the Deni Ute Muster Museum. Here, you can learn all about the famous event through interactive displays and memorabilia. Remember to take photos of the iconic windmill and Ute Muster Gates. Check before visiting whether the museum is open. It wasn’t open when we went out, but still worth a visit as it is only about 10 minutes out of town on the Conargo Road. The ute muster gate is very impressive as well as the big windmill.

Fun fact: The two-day Deni Ute Muster holds the world record for the largest parade of utility vehicles.

6/ Local Markets Deniliquin

Deniliquin markets are a must-visit for tourists and locals alike. They take place twice a month on Saturdays in Waring Gardens. A wide range of stalls offer souvenirs, arts and crafts, fresh produce and clothing. You can browse through unique items from talented local artisans and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the markets in Deniliquin.

Here Are The Markets In Deniliquin:

  • Lions Club Community Market: The fourth Saturday of the month.
  • Naponda Farmers Market: The Second Saturday of the month.

There are also Mother’s Day and Father’s Day markets held on the respective days of the year.

7/ The Mural On The Water Tower And Scotts Park

On the corner of Russell and Whitelock street you will find a mural painted on the 22.8 meter high water tower. The mural was painted by street artist Cam Scale, who also painted the Devenish silo. These silos are part of the silo art trail near Benalla which is part of the Silo Art Trail Northeast Victoria.

The water tower was painted in 2019 and depicts the landscape of Deniliquin. There are a couple of kookaburras as well as a camp fire.

Scotts Park Deniliquin

Beside the water tower is Scotts Park also known as Rocket Park. This is a large park area, with climbing equipment, BMX pump track, a tall rocket. It is a great way to entertain the kids from toddlers up to teenagers. It is a great place for a picnic or BBQ, and fun for the whole family.

8/ Bushwalking And Nature Trails

Beach to Beach Walk Deniliquin

Nature trails and bushwalking are the highlights of a holiday in Deniliquin. The surrounding countryside has lush, natural lagoons teeming with native bird species and wildlife. Scenic nature walks take you through magnificent forests and unique riverside beaches.

The first day that we spent at Deniliquin we started with a short walk from where we were staying, through Waring Park down to the Edward River and to the Peppin Heritage Centre. Before reaching the centre we saw the the sculpture called Reutilise, which is an old Holden Ute which is covered in old objects found around the district farms. It is part of the sculptures along The Long Paddock.

The sculpture named shod is in recognition of the bullocks that were used instead of horses to haul the settlers belongings, clear the land and ploughing the paddocks. As the bullocks were important to their owners they had them shod depending on the terrain where they were used in. Due to the bullock having cloven hooves the shoe had to be made in two halves to fit. The above image is a large sculpture of the half shoe.

We also walked through the Inland Sanctuary, Memorial Park through to Willoughby’s Beach. Part of the Beach to Beach walk. It was a cool morning but we soon warmed up as we walked. You will see quite a few people as a lot of locals walk their dogs out here. If you are taking your dog with you, they need to be on a lead the whole time and you need to carry a bag to pick up the dog poos.

It is a nice walk along the Edward River, listening to the birds in the tall Red Gum Trees. Keep a look out for the kangaroos that hide among the trees, we saw a kangaroo with a joey in her pouch. They are usually quiet and if you are quiet and don’t try to get too close, they will sit there while you watch them.

Willougbys Beach

Walking further along you come to Willoughby’s Beach where there are picnic areas and white beach sand where you can swim in the river. There are also areas where you can camp for free, but you need to leave it how you found it.

Memorial Park Deniliquin

Memorial Park is where there are a lot of sporting clubs. The sporting clubs are football and netball club, Cricket Club, and a golf course. There are also sheds and sheep yards for the annual show.

The District Historical Society Museum is worth a visit during your holiday in Deniliquin. Located in the heart of Deniliquin, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s ancient history. Housed in a historic building, the museum showcases a diverse collection of artifacts, historic items, photographs and documents that highlight the area’s past.

Located at the end of Macauley Street close to the Edward River. It is open Tuesdays and Saturdays or by appointment for group bookings. We did not get to see the museum as it was closed the day we were there.

11/ Birdwatching

The Deni region is home to over 80 native birds—more than one-third of Australia’s bird species. You can arrange an experienced local guide at the visitor Information Centre. This is the best idea if you want to spot some of the rarer bird species like the Plains Wanderer.

When Staying in Deniliquin we went to The Crossing Cafe for a coffee and also had some nice carrot cake for afternoon tea. The Peppin Heritage centre is in the same building as The Crossing Cafe. So why not have a look through the Peppin visitor centre and Crossing Cafe.

Cruizin Diner And The Depot

The Depot and Cruizin Diner are beside each other, as well as a fuel station. It is a spot where Truckies, locals and visitors can stop refuel their vehicles and themselves. When you buy a ticket to visit The Depot, it is a day ticket so you can split the time and have a break at the Cruizin Diner. Then go back and finish at the Depot.

A visit to the Depot is a must, especially if you enjoy history and love looking at old cars from the 60’s and 70’s. There are also a lot of memorabilia through out the Depot. It is also a place with things of interest for everyone. From household items to kids toys from the 70’s. It brings back a lot of memories from back when you were a kid. That’s if you were born in the 50’s and 60’s!!

15/ Rest Area Out The Road To Hay

Over the river towards Hay there is a rest area. The area is large enough for caravans and truck to park. There are toilets here and also a RV dumping point.

Transporting Wall of Fame

At this rest area there is a sculpture as part of the Long Paddock, it is a structure of a large wood cutting blade. It is in recognition of the sawmill in Deniliquin when redgum was found to be a good type of wood for the construction industry.

There is also a Wall of Fame for the Deniliquin and District transporting industry. It is quite interesting looking at the different names on the wall. The art work above the wall is interesting and well worth a look.
