Rottnest Island, located off the coast of Perth, Western Australia, is a hidden gem that promises breathtaking landscapes, stunning beaches, and a unique wildlife experience. As someone who has had the privilege of visiting this island paradise. I’m thrilled to share my first hand knowledge and offer you valuable insights into planning your own adventure. So, let’s dive in and discover the wonders of Rottnest Island together.
How To Get To Rottnest Island:
The trip to Rottnest Island is where the adventure begins; there is no bridge or causeway that connects the island to the mainland. There are three main transport options from the Western Australian mainland:
1/ The Ferry
This is the most convenient and affordable option. There are multiple ferry operators that have regular services from Perth City, Fremantle, and Hillarys Boat Harbour. The ferry ride time can vary from 25 minutes up to 45 minutes depending on the specific departure point.
It’s advisable to book the tickets in advance during peak seasons to ensure that you get your preferred ferry departure time.
We chose to catch the Ferry at Barrack street Jetty, as we wanted to cruise down the Swan River to take in the scenery along the way. It was also closer to our accommodation and we did not have a car. I had a leisurely walk from our Hotel to meet the ferry.
As there is only one ferry a day it takes all day leaving early in the morning and we arrived back after 6pm. As we picked up and dropped off on the way back, it took a bit longer as the ferry was full. But it was interesting traveling along the Swan River as there was a commentary. This added to the trip, as we learned more about interesting landmarks and the houses of famous Australians.
2/ A Private Boat To Travel Across To Rottnest Island
If you have a yacht or private boat, you can travel to Rottnest Island and there are a number of paid mooring to use. If you choose this route, you must adhere to the usual maritime regulations and have the necessary permits to dock on the island.
3/ Helicopter Transfer To Rottnest Island
This is the most luxurious and spectacular way to arrive on the island. There are helicopter transfers and tours available from Perth City and other select locations. These rides give the visitor amazing views of the island and surrounding coastline.
Visiting Rottnest Island During The Winter Months:
While Rottnest Island is often associated with warm summer days. Visiting during the winter months offers a unique and equally rewarding experience.
From June to August, the island takes on a tranquil charm with fewer tourists. This allows you to immerse yourself fully in its natural beauty.
Although the weather may be cooler, it’s still pleasant enough to enjoy outdoor activities, go cycling, or simply explore the island’s serene beaches and hidden coves. Plus, you’ll have the added advantage of finding great deals on accommodations and activities.
Talking to some of the other tourists on the bus, I discovered that for some Western Australians, this was where they had been coming for years for their annual family holiday. For some they had come to Rottnest Island as a child and they now came with their own children.
We visited during winter in July, it was cool and we wore coats. But we still got quite warm when walking around Rottnest Island. The weather was good and we had an amazing time watching the Quokkas.
Things To Do On Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. With no private vehicles permitted on the island, bicycles become the primary mode of transportation, making it a cyclist’s paradise.
Renting a bike from one of the island’s various rental outlets is an absolute must. Pedaling along the scenic coastal roads, you’ll uncover breathtaking vistas, pristine beaches, and secluded bays at your own pace.
Tip: Getting around the Island is Quite hilly, so if you are not use to riding a bike, a better option may be to use the Hop-on-hop off bus.
Using The Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus To Get Around The Island
When visiting Rottnest Island I chose to go on the Hop-on-Hop-Off bus. I found this to be very good as the bus driver gave a commentary along the way with a lot of information about the island. Also, telling you some of the best stops to get on and off. At some of the stops there were volunteers there to talk about that particular area of the Island. They had interesting information to share with everyone.
Some of the stops involved a bit of walking, but you can choose the stops that you wish to walk. The bus stopped right in front of the bay in the above image, and their were a few people snorkeling even though it was in winter and the temperature was only 17 degrees Celsius.
This was too cold for me. But there were a few that were a bit braver than I was.
For those seeking adventure, snorkeling, and diving are popular activities. The island boasts an underwater world teeming with colorful marine life, vibrant coral reefs, and even shipwrecks waiting to be explored.
Numerous snorkel trails are marked throughout the island, offering easy access for beginners and experienced snorkelers alike.
Available Refreshments At Rottnest Island:
After a day of exploring, you’ll undoubtedly want to refuel and savor some local delicacies. Rottnest Island offers a range of dining options, from casual beach-side cafes to upscale restaurants. Indulge in fresh seafood, including the local specialty of Western Rock Lobster, or opt for a relaxed picnic with a selection of locally sourced produce.
Don’t forget to treat yourself to a refreshing beverage or sample some regional wines while taking in the island’s stunning sunsets.
Quokka Encounters Rottnest Island:
One of the highlights of visiting Rottnest Island is the chance to encounter the island’s adorable native residents, the quokkas. These small, friendly marsupials have become an international sensation, famous for their smiling faces and photogenic poses.
Keep your camera handy as you explore the island, and you’re likely to spot these delightful creatures hopping about, particularly near the settlement area. Remember to approach them with respect and caution, as they are wild animals.
Be patient and you may even be able to get a selfie with one of the curious animals.
What Should You Take For A Day Exploring Rottnest Island
- Wear comfortable Clothes and Foot wear for a lot of walking. In Winter a coat is advisable
- Towel and Bathers if you plan to go swimming
- A bag or Backpack to carry your things
- Sun hat and sun glasses
- Water Bottle
- Snacks
- Camera or Phone to take photos
- Be sure to get a map of the island to identify spots of interest to you
- Note you are not allowed to fly Drones on the Island
