Day 1- Traveling From Melbourne To Swan Hill
The drive from Melbourne to Swan Hill is a scenic 3.5 to 4-hour journey northwest, covering around 335 kilometers. This stretch offers a picturesque escape from the city, guiding travelers through lush farmland, rolling vineyards, and charming small towns. Leaving Melbourne, you’ll head along the Calder Freeway, soaking in views of the Macedon Ranges and the sprawling plains of Victoria’s countryside. It’s an ideal route for those who enjoy leisurely road trips and scenic detours.
Along the way, you’ll pass several delightful stops. Kyneton is one of the first, known for its artisanal food scene and quaint historic buildings—perfect for a coffee break or brunch. As you continue, Bendigo is a must-visit with its rich gold-rush history, beautiful heritage architecture, and famed Bendigo Art Gallery.

For a more nature-focused detour, take a quick stop at Lake Boga. Before Swan Hill, you can visit the Lake Boga Flying Boat Museum and learn about its intriguing WWII history. Lake Boga is also a good day trip from Swan Hill, taking only about 15 minutes to get there.
Each stop adds its unique charm to the journey, making the drive to Swan Hill as memorable as the destination.
Day 2 And 3: Visit The Pioneer Settlement
You will need at least one full day to fully explore the Pioneer Settlement, which is why we’ve allocated day two and three in this itinerary. There are plenty of things to see and do, with lots of activities. When you purchase a ticket for the Pioneer Settlement it is valid for two days.
If There Are A Couple Of Activities You Would Like To Do For Example:

- The Pioneer Settlement and a ride on the PYAP
- The Pioneer Settlement and the Sound and Light Show
- Both Sound and Light Shows

Visit To The Pioneer Settlement
The Pioneer Settlement is a historical attraction with things for visitors of all ages. You can wander around approximately 50 heritage buildings from the 19th and early 20th century. These buildings have been restored or recreated and include a general store, blacksmith’s shop and some original homesteads. You can also see various exhibits from pioneering days such as household items, agricultural tools and even clothing.

There are also some interactive activities including live blacksmithing demonstrations or you can learn about rope making and traditional woodworking skills. Costumed people who portray pioneer era characters who chat to visitors with stories, providing insights into the lives of the early settlers. There is also the option to dress up in period costume yourself and have your photograph taken for a souvenir of your visit.
Take A Ride On A Vintage Vehicle Or PS Pyap

Enjoy a free ride in a vintage vehicle around the Settlement. This includes horse drawn carriages that ride around the settlement or you can take a ride in a vintage car.
Alternatively, you can take a cruise along the Murray River. The Pyap paddle steamer offers hour-long cruises where you can soak up the scenic river views and learn more about the history of the region.
When you’re ready to refresh yourself, you can enjoy a snack or meal at the Paragon cafe or purchase a sweet treat at the Old Time Lolly Shop.
Sound And Light Shows At Pioneer Settlement

Since we’ve allowed two days for the Pioneer Settlement, be sure to stay after dark on one of the days to take in the “Heartbreak of the Murray” laser show. This is a multi sensory sound and light show that tells the fascinating story of the Murray River.
Day 4: Visiting Sites Around Swan Hill
Day four is a little more flexible as you can spend the entire day around Swan Hill, Victoria. You can stop at the Swan Hill Art Gallery or enjoy a coffee at Spoons. Why not walk off a great lunch with a leisurely stroll along the Murray River?
If you’re a keen golf enthusiast, you could head to the Murray Downs Golf and Country Club. This is an 18 hole championship course that many pros agree is one of the best resorts in the country. It is certainly the number one course along the Murray River. You can also enjoy a delicious lunch at Bistro Restaurant in the clubhouse or for a lighter bite, head to the Cafe for a sandwich or wrap.

During your afternoon, you could take a drive around Swan Hill. There are some famous sites including the Clock Tower, Big Cod and the Burke and Wills Tree. If you have children with you, Swan Hill has some lovely playgrounds around the town. There is also a skate park at Riverside Park.
Day 5: Spend A Day At Lake Boga
Lake Boga lies approximately 17 kilometers to the south of Swan Hill. It is most famous for the Catalina Museum where you can learn about World War II flying boats and the role Lake Boga played.
Beside the museum is the Catalina Grill House, where you can enjoy lunch. Alternatively, you could pack a picnic and sit beside the lake for a relaxing break. The lake is also the ideal spot for a walk, swimming, kayaking or even paddle boarding.



You’ll also find silo art near lake Boga. The silo towers are near the railway line and you should see them as you drive through the area. There is also the story wall and Cannie Ridge Pump.
It is well worth spending the entire day at Lake Boga. Whether you choose to have an action packed day on the lake or enjoy Lake Boga at a more sedate place, it is a wonderful place to visit.
Day 6: Go For A Drive North Of Swan Hill
On day six, you’re going to take in the scenery with a drive north of Swan Hill, Victoria. Take the Murray Valley Highway towards Nyah and head towards the Murray River. Here you’ll find one of the last operating ferries that can take you across to Speewa Island.
There is an area on the island at the Victoria side where you can camp or fish. You can also simply sit and watch the ferry travel.
You will need to drive off the ferry when you reach the island and then turn around to return back. The ferry is a free service.
When you get back on the Murray Valley Highway, there is a turn off to Pheasant Farm, where you can wander the gardens or take a guided tour of the farm operations. This is Australia’s only commercial game bird farm that is open to visitors, so it can provide a unique experience. You can pack your own picnic or ask for lunch when you book your tour.
If this isn’t interesting to you, you can continue to Nyah and visit the Old Machinery Museum, which is home to one of the largest private collections of Ford tractors in Australia.
Day 7: Choose From 3 Possibilities for Your Last Day at Swan Hill Victoria
Day seven is open for three possibilities. This allows you to tailor the itinerary to suit your preferences and current inclinations.
1/ A Day For Relaxing On The Murray River:

If you’re feeling a little tired from your Swan Hill adventures, why not take day seven for relaxing. You could take a leisurely walk along the Murray River, taking in the peaceful and scenic views. You can head down to Riverside Park for some lovely walking paths.
The river is also the perfect spot for a picnic and relaxing by the water. There are lots of places along the riverbank with shaded areas and picnic tables.
If your idea of a perfect day for relaxing is fishing, Swan Hill offers the ideal place. The Murray River is well known for its fishing and you can find Murray cod and golden perch in the waters.
2/ Day Trip To Sea Lake:
If you’re in the mood for a more active day, you could take a day trip to Sea Lake. The journey from Swan Hill to Sea Lake takes approximately one hour. You’ll need to take the B400 Murray Valley Highway south and then follow the Sea Lake Swan Hill Road to the lake.
For a full day at the lake, it is a good idea to head out early so you’ll have plenty of time to take in all of the sights.
Your first stop would be Lake Tyrrell. This is the largest salt lake in Australia. It has unique landscapes and some beautiful reflective surfaces on the water. If you get there at sunrise, you’ll have the perfect light for some stunning photographs. There are viewing platforms around the lake, but you can simply walk around to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.
It is also worth taking some time to explore the Sea Lake township. There is a local museum where you can learn about the history of the town and its connection to Lake Tyrrell. You can also stroll the streets to see the murals and street art that showcase the area’s culture and history. There are some great cafes if you want to stop for a light snack or coffee, but be sure to save your appetite for lunch. The Junction Hotel is a popular spot for visitors and you can enjoy a lively atmosphere and some great food.

After lunch, you can spend some more time walking the lake trails, sit and relax or check out the Sea Lake silo art. You could also take a scenic drive to Green Lake, which is a nearby freshwater lake. Allow some time to explore the backroads to check out the scenic and unique landscape of the Mallee region.
3/ Day Trip To Balranald
Another day trip option for day seven is Balranald. This is a charming town that has some unique local attractions and a rich history. Again, it’s a good idea to get an early start as the journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. You’ll need to head north towards Tooleybuc on the Murray Valley Highway or B400. You can then follow the Sturt Highway or A20 to Balranald.
Balranald Information Centre

When you reach Balranald, it is a good idea to make the Visitor Information Centre your first stop. You can pick up brochures and maps for the local attractions, events and walking trails. There are also interactive displays at the centre, where you can learn about the natural environment, culture and history of the region.
Yanga National Park
One of the main attractions of Balranald is the Yanga National Park. Here you’ll find some spectacular grounds and gardens, where you can wander and soak in the scenery. You can also visit the Yanga Homestead and Yanga Lake.
Where To Eat In Balranald
You won’t need to leave Balranald when you’re ready for lunch. There are some great local cafes and pubs including the Shamrock Hotel or the Balranald Bakery. Alternatively, you could bring a picnic and set up in a spot by the lake.
After lunch, head down to the Balranald Discovery Centre. There is a walkway along the boardwalk where you can see the native flora and fauna or walk through the interactive exhibits that showcase the indigenous culture, natural history and European settlement in the area.
Mungo National Park

Be sure to leave plenty of time to visit Mungo National Park. This does require a little more driving, as the park is approximately 100 kilometers from Balranald. But, it does have the World Heritage listed Willandra Lakes that are known for their archaeological significance and stunning landscapes.
Before you leave Balranald, make sure to stop at the Five Rivers Lookout. This scenic viewpoint offers panoramic views of where the five rivers meet that is perfect to appreciate the area’s natural beauty.
Day 8: Returning Home:
On day eight, you’ll be heading home. Hopefully, you will be feeling relaxed and ready to get back to the real world. However, you may still have time to take in a leisurely breakfast at one of the fantastic cafes in the town. You could also pick up a few muffins for the road from the Sherbet Cafe and Bake Shop.
Once you’re replete, you can fuel up and start heading back to Melbourne. If you missed any of the stops on the route in, take a little time to visit them now. You could even take the other route back, so you can have a complete visitor experience and know that you’ve made the most of your trip to Swan Hill.
